How do you change the order of WooCommerce product attributes?
Let’s get to the main business. To reorder the Product attributes in your WooCommerce store, just follow these 6 steps:
Step 1: Go to Products > Attributes
The first thing you need to do is open the Dashboard of your WooCommerce Site. Then, from the Products section, Click on “Attributes”.
Step 2: Click on a Specific Attribute
On this page, you will find the various attributes of your store.
Now all you need to do is go to the attribute you want to edit and click “Edit”. As you can see, our “Size” attribute isn’t in the right order. Its correct order should be XS. S, M, L, XL. So, in this guide, we are going to edit it.
Step 3: Set Default Sort Ordering to Custom
Here you will be able to edit the attribute completely. Go down below and you will find the “Default sort order” section.
There are a total of 4 options in it.
What are they? Have a quick look.
- Custom Ordering: This allows you to manually arrange the order of your attribute terms as per your preference.
- Name: Sorts the attribute terms alphabetically based on their names.
- Name (Numeric): Arrange the attribute terms in numerical order (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, … 10).
- Term ID: Sorts the attribute terms based on their unique Term ID, which WooCommerce assigns to each attribute/variation when added to your store.
You should choose the “Custom Ordering” option as it provides more flexibility and you get to manually arrange the order.
Keep in mind that, in our case, it was already on “Custom Ordering”. However, you might have it in any of the other three options. So, just click on the “Default sort order” section and select the “Custom Ordering” option.
Click on the “Update” option down below.
It will show you that the attribute has been updated successfully.
Step 4: Configure Terms for Custom Ordering
You will find that the “Order by” section is currently on “Custom ordering”. Now, click on the “Configure terms” to rearrange the values.
Step 5: Rearrange the Attribute Terms/Values
You’re almost done here! Simply drag and drop the values with the three horizontal lines on the right-hand side.
In this case, we’ll be sorting the ‘Size’ attribute in ascending order, from the smallest to the largest, such as ‘XS’, ‘S’, ‘M’, ‘L’, and ‘XL’.
How do you save it? Well, it will be saved automatically. Now, all you have to do is check the front end of the product page and see if everything works correctly.
Step 6: Check the front of the Product Page
Visit the product page on the front of your store to ensure the attribute terms are displayed in the new order. In other words, check if the process on how to change the Order of Product Attributes in WooCommerce has been done properly.
As you can see, our product “IKAZZ Women’s Winter Warm” jacket now shows the size value in the correct ascending order which is “XS>S>M>L>XL”.
That’s it! In this way, you can change the order values of product attributes.
How do you change the multiple attribute orders for a single product?
Some of our products might have more than one attribute such as “Color” and “Size”. Now, if you want to change the Attribute order itself instead of the value inside it, WooCommerce gives you that option too. Here are the steps you need to take:
- To change the Attribute Order itself, just go to the Specific Product page.
- Then from the Product data page, select, the attributes tab.
- Use the three horizontal lines next to each attribute to drag and rearrange them in your desired order.
- Once done, click Save Attributes to apply the changes.
As you can see, in the product pages, the “Size” attribute is after the “Color” attribute.
We hope this process seemed easy to you and you will be able to change the order of the WooCommerce product attributes at one go.
7 Best Practices for Managing Product Attributes
Here are some key tips to manage the product attributes in your WooCommerce store:
1. Prioritize Customer Needs
Arrange attributes based on what your customers care about the most. For example, put “Size” before “Material” for clothing items.
2. Use Descriptive Attribute Names
Choose clear, concise names for attributes (e.g., “Fabric Type” instead of just “Fabric”).
3. Limit the Number of Attributes
Don’t overload your products with too many attributes. Focus on the most relevant ones that will guide customers in their purchasing decisions. Too many choices can overwhelm shoppers.
4. Use Hierarchical Attributes
If applicable, create parent-child relationships for attributes (e.g., “Size” with sub-options like Small, Medium, Large). This helps organize complex options and improves the shopping experience.
5. Update Attributes Regularly
Keep product attributes up to date, especially if there are changes in product features, materials, or inventory. Regular updates prevent confusion and ensure accurate product listings.
6. Utilize Global Attributes
For products with similar characteristics, use global attributes to save time and maintain uniformity across your catalog (e.g., “Color” or “Brand” that applies to multiple products).
7. Test for Mobile Compatibility
Ensure that your attributes are easily visible and accessible on mobile devices. With increasing mobile shopping, it’s essential that product attributes display clearly without causing navigation issues.
